Scythes of Antichrist
interview
We are glad we can introduce you short chat with Gene Palubicki currently feeding two bands as PERDITION TEMPLE and Blasphemic Cruelty. Interview revolves of course around the first mentioned one which is in my view highly original and actually refers to the old Angelcorpse recordings! The band has recently written itself down to the book of death by his famous "The Tempter's Victorious" album, preceded by the "Sovereign Of The Desolate" EP from the previous year. How Gene perceives tying of both bands at each other, how the new album stands criticism and the like, you will learn from the interview.
Hell-o Gene, the new "The Tempter's Victorious" album is out. What are your feelings after a few months? Do you listen to it also at home? Do you prove to listen to the riffs you have written, arranged all the details and then carefully you have recorded them?
The wild changes in riffs and song building are never random... there is always some form of logic in what is going on... I just attempt to not always use a similar method for each song... so even though all the stuff sounds like it is from the same band I want to have sounds that are unexpected in the context of what listeners of this sort of music would find familiar... so as a collection of songs in an albums entirety, this latest PERDITION TEMPLE album is probably the most varied I've done over the years... There was nothing odd or out of step in the recording process of any sort of metal album, but the arrangement of what the 2 guitars at once are doing is carefully constructed to create particular tones/sounds in some way...
How was the album received by the criticism? Have they compared your music to any particular bands or even they mentioned copying? Are you sensitive to it if someone wrote you copy any major band?
Most all reviews/etc that I've seen are positive, or at worst saying the same sort of things that has been ever said about anything I've done in nearly 2 decades now...
In my view, and I wrote it also in my review, you have specific way of riffing and songwriting, the riffs are so dense it often come to me as if one track was made of two tracks. In fact, I even thought as if the riffs were coming from every side of the world, it's a big rush of energy and feelings. I even compared you to Trey Azagthoth by your contribution...
Some riffs have what you'd call "polyrhythms" ... where there are 2 parts doing different things that add up to the one sound that is heard when together... if separated sound like different parts altogether... and even some the more dissonant stuff is actually constructed in unusual harmonic accuracy.. just not the typical use of harmonies the ear is accustomed to... I've made a bit of study over the years of various cultures musical nuances and have adapted bits of all of it into parts/songs I make... so nothing ever sounds like an "eastern" song, or from "Egypt", or even common western musical common patterns... when taking a little from here or there and then blending all of it enables much more shifting variations in songs....
How did you all share writing music on "The Tempter's Victorious"? Is the composition purely a matter of you only or also other members contributed? How exactly the new album has been created from composition viewpoint?
All the music and lyrics on the new full length are written by me... arrangements for all the drum parts/etc were completely created by Ronnie... the song on the 7" ep was a collaboration between Bill and myself...
How would you compare the bands Angelcorpse and Blasphemic Cruelty versus PERDITION TEMPLE? Can you see pretty big differences in the riffs?
Music wise there is nothing alien in PERDITION TEMPLE that I would not have eventually developed through ANGELCORPSE if the band had continued... BLASPHEMIC CRUELTY is more of direct dark speed metal influences like SODOM or DESTRUCTION, and maybe the more creative times of SLAYER ... and also some of the extreme thrash you might expect from old SAD X, SLAUGHTER LORD, or the old Polish band, MERCILESS DEATH... or even the full bore speed of DARK ANGEL... BLASPHEMIC CRUELTY is my way of evoking those sounds that have seemed to drift away since the turn of the 90's when the "primitive" death metal explosion took hold and many bands abandoned those old great attacking sounds...
In the review I also mentioned a very special melody of PERDITION TEMPLE, I would not say it is the typical harmony someone can whistle: D Melody is so perverse and rapidly changing the unprepared listener may not even handle it. Do you think we can talk directly about dissonance or rather about difficult and complex melodies?
I mentioned that I try to create riffs that dodge around ideas of what listeners are known to, but I make a point of trying to go to some other places that might not be the normal or obvious... it is a sort of logic I've applied to death metal music that might be somewhat influenced by old great guitarists like Uli Jon Roth or Ritchie Blackmore... where there might be multiple styles of stuff all going along in one part that is not of expected typical musical composition...
I would also point out your solos, in principle, I find them similar to the old Slayer, or Morbid Angel, apparent chaos and incredible speed prevails, yet they are technically sophisticated. How do you prove to remember these solos? Don't you have problem to play them live?
The chaos comes from the fact that despite the techniques used are disciplined... my writing of solos is relatively impromptu... I usually track several solos when doing the recordings and find the places I want to go with the sounds/etc..once I get the one that lands in the way that speaks to me it is permanent... they are all relatively "in key" based on the structure of whatever riff they are played over... but by the time I go out and play this stuff live there might be some differences as I feel them out... but always in the realm of what was recorded... I don't like the term, but maybe a more "organic" approach to solos... yes they are fast like SLAYER or MORBID ANGEL, but I try to weave in the nuance of bits of things like ROTH/BLACKMORE...
Your new Impurath vocalist comes from Black Witchery, I was surprised by the strong similarity with your vocal, his vocal fits into PERDITION TEMPLE like no one! How did you find so mad vocalist with such an overwhelming vocals? Is he a full member of the Black Witchery and PERDITION TEMPLE?
I'd known Impurath since the mid 90's when both our bands were in our demo stages... at some point a conversation came along and he suggested to offer some backing vocals for a new record... I suggested to take a step further and go all the way to do the main vocals... he is still primarily a full member of BLACK WITCHERY, but we navigate all our bands limited events to be able to have a uniform lineup live...
There were created a lot of fundamental and revolutionary albums in the 80s and 90s with bands like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priset, Mercyful Fate / King Diamond, Celtic Frost / Hellhammer, Venom, Bathory, Slayer, Morbid Angel and a bunch of others, most of their old creation are cults that formed whole Metal scene. Do you think it is possible to come up with such a strong and essential album today as well? Are there some recordings today so strong you could actually compare them with those mentioned?
There are diverse modern albums that I think I like as much as some of the old formative albums... as far as death metal stuff... some really strong ones I personally feel impact from are GENOCIDE SHRINES, NYOGTHAEBLISZ, ADVERSARIAL, and I thought the "Kenose" release from DEATHSPELL OMEGA was a sure advancement for what had been previously understood as "black metal"... there are others for sure, but these are a few that come to mind and that I listen to often...
You are currently maybe more about Blasphemic Cruelty band which should release a new EP in July. Are you looking forward to this act? What may we enjoy? Do you take BC as seriously as PD?
BLASPHEMIC CRUELTY might be a bit more of a project, but the composition of it's material is no less serious than PERDITION TEMPLE... the cd edition of the new mcd/mlp is currently available from the HHR website... and as the year progresses I'll aim to coordinate some live events for that band as well as fitting in PERDITION TEMPLE activities... all of this amongst my new field of artistic endeavors which will reveal itself shortly....
Ok, that would be all from me, thank you for this interesting interview and wish PERDITION TEMPLE a lot of chaotic inspiration, thanks again!
Thanks for the major support!!!
